Avalon, Mississippi

Avalon is an unincorporated community in Carroll County, Mississippi, United States.

Avalon is part of the Greenwood, Mississippi micropolitan area

It is known as the home of the great bluesman Mississippi John Hurt.[1] However in 2006 Avalon was nothing but a spot in the road on Highway 7 about 12 miles north of Greenwood with a small green highway sign depicting Avalon, and a commemorative Highway marker placed by Carroll County recognizing Hurt as a great bluesman. Avalon today just has the remains of a store that used to be there, and a few houses plus the 'Mississippi John Hurt Museum' which is contained in the shack where he lived.
